The game was nominated for "Excellence in Multiplayer" at the 2018 SXSW Gaming Awards, and for "Multiplayer" at the 14th British Academy Games Awards. On Metacritic, the game holds a score of 67/100 for the PlayStation 4 version based on 8 reviews, indicating "mixed or average reviews." Outside of early access, Gang Beasts received mixed reviews from critics on both the PC and PlayStation 4 versions of the game. Comments include Keith Stuart of The Guardian calling it "probably one of the silliest beat-'em-ups ever made," Jessica Conditt from Engadget calling it "a jolly good time," and Steve Hansen from Destructoid highlighting how its weirdness plays out well. ![]() Don't take both hands off of the opponent, instead go one hand at a time to grab them by a part of their body that they can't reach you back from, such as on their legs or lower torso.Already in its freeware alpha state, as well as upon Steam Early Access release, the game was met with positive response from critics and fans. It's frustrating to have a foe holding onto the player with just as strong a grip, but there are ways around this. Sometimes the enemy just won't let go, especially enemies that are trying to avoid being thrown off of a ledge. It's not a guaranteed escape, and there's no perfect way to do it, but leaning in different directions and continually pulling away should eventually force the opponent to let go, giving you a second to reposition and get the upper hand. One of the easiest (and perhaps most intuitive) ways to break free of a neverending hold is to rapidly press the jump button. In that case, many of these tactics still work effectively because of the extremely close range and ability to reposition oneself. Sometimes the player is the one who doesn't want to let go as their opponent might be trying to throw them off the side of the stage. It's not necessarily a death sentence to get into an inescapable hold, though, and the game offers multiple effective ways to break out. One of the most frustrating things in Gang Beasts is being unable to escape an opponent who is dead-set on never letting go. If all else fails, it's better to force a tie than to accept defeat. By using methods to escape their vice grip players can reposition themselves and create advantages. One of the most annoying things to deal with is opponents who just won't let go, though. There are a handful of basic Gang Beast moves in the game – Headbutting, Jumping, Punching, Grabbing, and Kicking to name a few – all of which can be combined with each other to create devastating combos.
